Raising The Cash For Your Home Remodeling Project

Very few of us have that odd thousand dollars or two lying around just waiting to be spent on home improvements. Never mind, there are plenty of opportunities these days to raise additional finance and at very reasonable interest rates.

Shop around a bit from bank to bank but, whatever you do, don't get sucked in by the loan sharks that lurk on the pages of most every newspaper these days or send spam emails to you.

For those modest jobs around the home still the easiest method is to use your credit card. It will typically allow you up to a month of interest-free credit so long as you repay the amount next time you receive a statement.

For larger projects, such as window replacement, it's possible that the installer will offer you its own finance package, usually arranged through a loan company. So it may be convenient to tie-up the transaction with one person, but check the interest rate you will be charged, and compare it with alternative financing.

If you've a sound credit record most banks and building societies will be pleased to provide finance for improvements, especially if it's going to increase the property's value of the property. Sometimes it can be done as an unsecured personal loan, which means your home is not used as security but the interest is normally higher. A secured loan means that you pay less interest but your home is at risk if you fail to keep up the repayments.

If you have an existing mortgage it may be possible to top it up with a new loan at very little expense, spread the payments over a longer period, and pay a lower interest rate.

Remember:
...take care whom you finally select to do your work - the cheapest may not be the best! Ask to view an example of their work before you take the plunge.
...when deciding to take some form of financial product, consider the options and chose the one that best suits your circumstances.
...and do seek independent advice if you are in any doubt at all.
